Perhaps it was done on purpose to give the spotlight to the apes, but it sure doesn't make sense. In a world full of Marios, Sonics, Crash Bandicoots, Crocs, Gexes, Donkey Kongs etc., Spike is just to normal and he lacks much personality. The character you get to control, Spike, is just a little too normal. The one problem with the gameplay though is that sometime you just don't care. Like getting overtaken in the last lap after holding a huge lead in Ski-Kidz Racing, or getting pummeled in the last round of the chamionship in Specter Boxing. Sometimes though, these games get really cheap. My favorite is Specter Boxing, just think about it, monkeys duking it out, pure genius. The mini-games alone contain bucket-loads of fun. Ski-Kidz Racing, Specter Boxing, and the Asteroids type space game. they just fit so well with the premise of the game that you don't mind playing what seems like the same ice level you have played hundreds of times before. Granted, the levels are cliche, levels where dinosuars roam free, an ice level, a water level etc. Seriously, who expects to use a remote control car when all of those apes are running rampant and you are charged with having to capture them? Every facet of the game is just incredibly tight and well-conceived. It's hard for me not to smile when using the remote control car. From a remote control car, to a hoola hoop, to a slingshot and a monkey radar, everything you could possibly want to help you catch those crazy critters is in here. To do this you must use all sorts of gadgets to help you along the way. The object of the game is to capture as many monkeys as you possibly can, obviously. Everything about the game centers on the player having fun. Gameplay is the main emphasis in Ape Escape. Eveything just comes together in this game to make the PSX's best platformer to date. It uses all ten buttons including 元 and R3, both analog joysticks, and the directional pad. The game was designed specifically to take full advantage of the contoller. But the biggest thing about this platformer is the use of the Dual Shock. Perhaps in an attempt to shove it the big N's face they make the object of the game to capture those zany monkeys. I think it's about time Sony caught up, enter Ape Escape. Just look at the whole Donkey Kong thing. They are usually big successes because of the marketability of the characters. They are so funny and goofy that videogame companies tend to like videogames based on them. I love 'em, you love 'em, we all love 'em. Weapons will only stun a monkey, and they must be captured using the Time Net.įinding every monkey in a level will unlock a time attack mode for the level, and collecting Specter Coins hidden in levels will unlock bonus games like boxing and skiing that use the dual stick controls.Monkeys. Some will barely pay attention to you and will prefer to goof off or sleep, while others will attack you with machine guns, rocket launchers, and UFOs. Each monkey has different stats and personalities. The goal in every level is to capture enough of Specter's monkeys to diminish their effect on history. Examples include a stun stick that can be slashed in any direction or spun in a circle, an RC Car that can drive alongside Spike as he runs, and a helicopter blade that can be spun rapidly to lift Spike or slow his descent. With the help of the Professor's numerous gadgets Spike will travel through prehistoric lands and capture Specter's army to prevent his evil scheme.īecause of the game's requirement of a Dual Shock controller, all of Spike's items are controlled through the right stick. There's just one catch: Spike was caught in the time machine as well, and has been pulled back into the past with them. Now he and his monkey army have taken over the Professor's time machine in order to to travel back in time and replace human civilization with a simian society. Specter, a popular attraction at the amusement park, has been transformed from a mild-mannered monkey into a scheming simian through the powers of the intelligence boosting Peak Point Helmet.
